Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States. Through Arkansas Drive Smart/Buckle Up, schools across the state have some opportunities to work with their students on increasing seat belt usage and decreasing distracted driving.

Schools can choose between two flexible options to fit their needs: a quick, classroom-based presentation or a more in-depth, student-led program.

Whether you’re looking for a one-day awareness activity or a multi-week initiative that builds student leadership, both options are designed to be practical, engaging, and easy to implement on your campus.

Driving Safety Presentation for the Classroom

This is a simple, flexible presentation you can use during any class period, short or long. Whatever works best for your schedule. It’s a great option for homeroom, life skills classes, or any time you’d normally show a movie or fill non-academic time.

It gives SROs and educators an easy way to talk with students about seatbelt use and distracted driving in a way that’s relatable and practical. Quick to set up, easy to adjust, and meaningful for students.

Arkansas Drive Smart

Arkansas Drive Smart is a student-led program from the Arkansas State Police that has increased seat belt use and reduced distracted driving among student drivers.

The program runs over six weeks and is designed to fit into the school schedule with minimal disruption to instructional time.

What is needed from the school?

  • A signed school agreement and completed mini-grant application
  • One designated faculty advisor
  • Two student leaders selected by the advisor
  • A student group to help conduct activities and evaluations

What does the school receive?

  • A mini-grant to cover program-related costs
  • Training, manuals, evaluation tools, and ongoing support
  • An end-of-challenge celebration for teams that complete the program

What’s the benefit?

  • Schools that participate for the first time see an average of a seven percent increase in seat belt usage on campus.
  • Schools that do the project annually typically see a baseline increase in pre-survey seat belt usage each year.

Both the classroom presentation and the Arkansas Drive Smart program will be available to schools across the state during the 2026–2027 school year. Take advantage of these opportunities and start planning now to bring one (or both) programs to your campus.
