High Expectations: Youth and Addiction
This course will provide participants with technically accurate and descriptive information on a range of topics including alcohol, marijuana, vaping and opioids that school personnel and school resource officers can use for beneficial conversations and presentations with their students. Participants will learn about the effects of these drugs on the body and why addiction happens so fast with youth in relation to adolescent brain development. The vaping portion of the course will discuss the now known long-term effects of vaping on the lungs and how the tobacco industry markets and targets teens and youth. The marijuana portion will cover such topics as the origins of marijuana, common misconceptions, the chemicals such as THC and CBD and the effects of marijuana use on youth development. Alcohol use among youth will also be addressed including such topics as which parts of the brain are affected and why its use is especially dangerous for youth. This course will also examine the recent opioid crisis that is happening in our country and why opioids are so highly addictive. This interactive and highly informative training will allow participants to walk away with the ability to explain addiction and with extensive knowledge of the drugs listed above.
