Our SRO Spotlight is on RAINA GUEVARA

Raina Guevara of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office brings energy, empathy, and a strong sense of purpose to her role as a School Resource Officer. Inspired by the positive influence of a D.A.R.E. officer during her own school years, Raina is committed to creating that same supportive environment for today’s students.
Serving the Hillcrest School District, she greets students each morning with high fives, fist bumps, and smiles—small gestures that set the tone for trust and connection. While every day brings unique challenges, Raina thrives on meeting students where they are, whether as a mentor, listener, or role model.
Her dedication to building rapport and promoting a safe, positive school climate makes her an invaluable part of the Hillcrest community.
How long have you worked in law enforcement?
2 Years
Why did you become an SRO?
When I was in school, I had a positive influence from the D.A.R.E. officer. After that I decided that I want to work as an officer in the school system and give children the same positive experience I had.
What school/school district do you currently serve?
Hillcrest School District
What do you find most challenging about working on a school campus?
One of the most challenging aspects is that there are many different students and each of those students have a different need. It could range from a parent figure, counselor, mentor, officer, or lending an ear when they need someone to talk to. With that being a challenge, it is also one of the things that drives me as I never know what each day has in store.
What do you find most rewarding about working on a school campus?
I love the kids and staff. It is rewarding to get the opportunity to put a smile on someone’s face. Each day when I come in, my favorite part is greeting the kids as they come in the door each morning with a high five, fist bump, or hug. Getting to help people along the way and become a part of their educational journey is very rewarding.
What has surprised you the most about working with kids?
I was most surprised by the things the kids said. They are very comical, and I get a good laugh each day. I was also surprised by how kind and how quickly they warmed up to me and began developing positive relationships.
Are there any programs/techniques that you feel have been helpful and effective in creating a safe learning environment?
I feel that building rapport with students as well as approaching each student, staff, or parent interaction with positivity and kindness is beneficial. I am also a big proponent of training, staying up on the latest developments of training and then applying what I have learned to my school district gives me an advantage on creating a safe learning environment and promoting a positive school climate.
What advice would you give to a first-year SRO?
Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and have fun with the kids. Interact with them, play at recess, or whatever the situation calls for. As a law enforcement officer, we sometimes forget that kids like to see us having fun as well.
What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t working?
I enjoy spending time in nature. I love to hunt, fish, hike, and ride ATVs. I love all outdoor activities.
If you weren’t a police officer, what would you be doing instead?
Park Ranger
