While much focus has recently been given to the physical safety of school campuses, the social or emotional safety of the school campus is not always given as much attention. The climate on a school campus can have a significant impact on the safety of that campus as well. School climate can be enhanced on any campus through the building of positive relationships with staff, students, parents and community members. This class is a dynamic and collaborative presentation which is taught by a school administrator and a school resource officer. Topics to be discussed include effective use of the SRO triad concept, strategies for building positive relationships with students, the importance of community events and their impact on the school and the evolution of social media and its effects on the students and climate of the school. This presentation will also focus on ways to develop student leaders from students displaying “at risk” or “troubled” behaviors.
